Today, the Tulum area is emerging as a potentially significant resort destination on the Quintana Roo coast and is poised for an expansion that will enhance the area for visitors and residents alike.

The potential for growth is exciting. The development of downtown Tulum and the surrounding areas is supported by local government agencies and a mandate to emerge as its own municipality and control its own density. Tulum has developed a “Plan Director de Desarrollo Urbano”, or PDDU, to manage growth in the area over the next 20 years within the parameters of construction, densities, vegetation control, ecological and archeological impact.

As part of President Felipe Calderon’s tourism strategy to keep pace with the increasing number of tourists visiting the Mayan Riviera, Mexico’s global tourist destination, a new International Mayan Riviera Airport is scheduled to open in 2010 in Playa del Carmen/Tulum, just 5 miles (8 km) from Aldea Zamá.
